My father designed and helped build this cabin as a project to kick off his retirement. This is a genuine log cabin, made with logs from the property and using traditional log building techniques. One of his Christmas presents the first year was a drawing knife to debark the logs. He's now several years into his project and it just keeps getting better every year. The cabin is nestled at the base of the mountains and on the edge of a man made pond in a beautiful and secluded setting. Whitetail deer, Black Bear, and bald eagles are at your doorstep in this cabin. The pond is stocked with trout and is catch and release. Try to catch them before the eagle does! Inside you'll find all the comforts of home...a fully equipped kitchen including a dishwasher. A beautiful wood burning fireplace is a beautiful accent in the open living area. Black Bear Lodge is a 3200 square foot Lindell Cedar home located conveniently just a short distance from Wellsboro, PA home of the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon, and Mansfield, PA, home of Mansfield Univesity of Pennsylvania. It is also within an hour drive from Corning NY and Watkins Glen. Other nearby attractions include the Tioga Central Railroad and Pine Creek. The lodge has 4 bedrooms: bedroom 1 has a king-sized bed (loft area), bedroom 2 has a queen, bedroom 3 has two full, and bedroom 4 has two twin. All bedding is included. The home features a fully equipped kitchen and dining area, and two separate living areas. We have a tv with the basic Direct TV package and a DVD player. Sand Road Apartment is on a dirt road that passes thru Tioga State Forest. This is a wild area of Pennsylvania. The apartment is recently constructed and on the second floor of a garage seperat from the owners residence. A carpeted stairway leads to the kitchen, living room, bedroom, and bathroom (shower) . Couples or singles are welcomed at the Sand Road apartment. A nice location to begin many activities from. Hike the trails across the road. Consult the Tioga State Forest map or a local trail guidebook and you will find a variety of beautiful hikes. Head down the mountain to the Rails To Trails bike trail for some flat bicycle riding thru some of the nicest scenery anywhere including The Grand Canyon Of Pennsylvania. Pine Creek nearby offers good trout fishing in the spring or canoeing, kayaking or white water rafting with the outfitters. Lakes nearby offer good fishing in all seasons. You will not be far from the town of Wellsboro. Whether its dining , entertainment (surprisingly good at The Deane Center ), shopping or just sitting on the town green, you balance your stay with a little getting back to civilization. You also have the option of easy highway access (roughly an hour north ) to tour Corning, Watkins Glenn, or the wine country around the Finger Lakes. Golf courses are reasonably close. Also it is worthy to note a number of annual activities held. The "Green Monster" running race passes thru the forest across the road from here in addition to mountain bike races. Sand Rd. is also part of the course of The Susquehannock Trail Rally. This is a Baja type car race on a national circuit that comes every year. You can snowmobile here as we are on a designated snowmobile allowed road. Driving thru the forest, you may see a variety of wildlife including deer, turkey, bears, coyote (mostly you just hear them at night) bobcats (maybe a fleeting glimpse) and grouse, chipmunks etc. The apartment sets on the second floor of a garage separate from the owners residence. There is a deck to relax on and a fire pit. If you have come on a motorcycle you are welcome to park in the shed over nite. Again , note the apartment is on the second floor. A carpeted stairway leads to the kitchen, living room, bedroom,, bathroom (shower), and laundry room (washer,dryer, and slop sink ). We have tried to make it as comfy and homey as possible. We will always be making improvements so come back often to see what is new! The yard is awesome for playing games and just hanging out. Bring your outdoor games as the yard across the bridge is huge. Our kitchen is beautiful, and well equipped for your "dining in" needs. The dining room is bright and has a table that seats 8 for dining, socializing and games in the evening. There is a beautiful closed in back porch to relax in. A comfortable living room with a smart TV. We offer a master bedroom on the main floor with a bathroom with shower just off the bedroom and a dressing room/ office. A vision of its owner, Dr. Richard Strauch, The Lodge was conceptualized and designed to reflect his love of the architecture and personality found in the mountains of Colorado and Montana. Dr. Strauch sat for endless hours with his auto cad software to design a structure that was open, with high vaulted ceilings, massive stone fireplaces and spacious rooms using reclaimed materials reflecting his passion for reclaiming the past and renewable resources. The main timber frame with its hand-hewn beams and sophisticated rustic appointments was originally an 1850’s barn scheduled for demolition in Liberty, PA. It was carefully dismantled and reconstructed, along with additional timbers from other barns in 2011, to serve as the structural support for the lodge. Huge stones were trucked in from over an hour away and carefully placed by a crane to serve as the hearth for the massive wood-burning fireplace. While insurance requirements prohibit guest use, it is truly a work of art to behold. Radiant heat provides even warmth during the winter months regardless of the temperatures outdoors. While you cannot have motorized vehicles on the Pine Creek Rail Trail, no such rule applies to this "spur", which is an old railroad bed. Connect to the railroad spur directly on our property and take it for 8/10 of a mile and access the groomed trail system directly across from the Log Cabin Inn restaurant. Take the spur 3 miles the other direction and connect at the entrance road to Colton Point. From either of these entrances you will have hundreds of miles of groomed snowmobile trails.
